The On Being Project (OBP) is seeking a digital visionary and strategist to become a key leader in the next-stage growth and social impact of our work. The ideal candidate has deep, demonstrable experience in creating and scaling a multi-platform presence for work with a national/global reach. For The On Being Project, this currently ranges from podcast platforms, an app in development, website, social media, an email newsletter, live and digital gatherings and events, and digital communications about our emergent social healing initiatives. The On Being Project is an enterprise with a story, an ethos, and a theory of change.

Our ideal colleague will be excited about the possibilities of bringing digital sophistication and innovation to a project which already has a distinctive cultural imprint and following. Our foundational public radio show and podcast, On Being with Krista Tippett, has been downloaded and played over 300 million times and is broadcast on over 400 public radio stations. Our newest podcast, Poetry Unbound, has been downloaded and played 3 million times in two seasons. Our Civil Conversations Project has inspired and resourced initiatives around the world. But we have never invested significantly in a multi-platform strategy or in strategic digital communications. We have tended instead, and grown by way of, the extraordinary engagement of a far-flung community of listeners. Partnering closely with Krista Tippett and On Being Studios EP Liliana Maria Percy Ruíz, the VP of Digital Experience and Strategy will be a key new steward of our audience/community and a driver of new initiatives for the next stage of this adventure.

Our future colleague will also be pivotal in the strategic direction we’ve taken since 2016, and with greater urgency in the post-2020 world, to understand ourselves as a “media and public life organization.” Central to that identity is our commitment to own the impact On Being has come to have in the landscape of social healing - the generative narrative of our time - and our potential to more directly amplify and contribute to that. For this reason, the VP of Digital Experience and Strategy will sit within the Social Healing team led by Lucas Johnson, assembled around expert knowledge in community organizing, pastoral care, and peacebuilding. Our digital presence will be pivotal to how we accompany individuals and communities doing the transformative work required to confront the pressing moral and ethical questions of our time.

Lucas Johnson says this about our vision for this new role: “Whenever people come to our social media channels, it is accompaniment in the digital sphere. What we do with those relationships needs intelligence and strategy and thoughtfulness - we bring them together and send them back out into the world. This is another place where we meet the mission of cultivating the inner work that leads to curiosity and social transformation. We need to be asking the question, how do we prepare digitally for that to happen?”

In every aspect of our work, The On Being Project is poised to scale to a next level. This will be a great creative challenge for a digital leader-colleague with the strategic intelligence and experience to help us effect that, and we are excited about innovating, learning, and growing alongside them.

The VP of Digital Experience and Strategy will own and lead the evolution of all aspects of The On Being Project’s digital footprint and ecosystem. Initially, this will focus on immersion in OBP’s presence across all current digital platforms to assess and finesse immediate needs related to digital presentation and communications, audience/community engagement, analytics, and industry trends. The role will quickly evolve into building a comprehensive strategy and forming a team to create a robust, diversified, growing presence across current and future platforms. This will include:

  • Developing and executing an ambitious, overarching digital engagement strategy across all platforms (podcasts, app, social media, email, website, events), informed by understanding OBP’s existing and emerging communities (listeners, community partners/networks, donors, collaborators), what they are seeking and how we can innovatively meet that, and how we can nimbly deepen our varied relationships with them.
  • Leading digital engagement best practices that are both responsive and proactive, exemplify our standards of excellence in presentation and hospitality in user experience, strategically pair engagement tools with engagement goals, create new pathways to our content and between the various channels of our work, and contribute to effective measurement of various types of individual and communal impact.
  • Leading creative direction and collaboration on new strategic initiatives and product development.
  • Building and managing a new digital engagement team that will likely include a digital experience manager and a manager of CRM/data/analysis. Collectively, this team will manage all digital platforms, executing the engagement strategy in collaboration with internal teams and workflows and external partners/vendors, and continually analyze and report learnings back to the wider organization to inform our work broadly.
  • Bringing ongoing thought leadership and initiative to our organization around emerging digital platforms, tools, and strategies, identifying opportunities for experimenting, learning, reporting, and iterating.

  • At least ten years of experience in leading the conception and execution of digital engagement strategies, including building and managing a high-performing digital team, and successfully collaborating across internal and external teams and workflows.
  • A portfolio that demonstrates effective and innovative strategies across digital platforms, including social media, leading to growth in scale and depth of participation.
  • Expertise delivering branded communications via digital campaigns (such as email series, website, digital/social ads, social media campaigns, SMS and peer-to-peer texting, digital advocacy or community-building tools).
  • Experience with maximizing CRM systems for informed, segmented digital engagement.
  • Ease with digital analytics and applying it to evolving strategies, including data-informed segmentation and communications towards mission-centered engagement goals.
  • Strongly preferred: experience working in national/global media, in mobile app development, and with community organizing/social entrepreneurship/social healing landscapes.
  • Preferred: some experience with the podcasting/radio/audio landscape.

  • A fierce curiosity and commitment to understanding and serving the beautiful cross-section of humanity that gives this project its time and attention and invites us into their lives.
  • A sense of adventure – you’ll be making something new, and in a world in epic transition.
  • A sense of humor, which we understand as a key fundament of wisdom.
  • A commitment to advancing the values of our placemaking initiative, as a colleague and an organizational leader.
  • An appreciation for On Being Project’s expanding scope of work as a media and public life organization, including how the digital experience can leverage our media offerings, our social healing accompaniment, and the interplay between them.
  • An ability to see the possibilities of the digital experience as both a driver of human connection and social change and as a business development opportunity.
  • All the qualities of a successful leader in a dynamic organization: exceptional collaborator, communicator, and manager; results-oriented from a foundation of best practice process; a proactive planner, navigator of competing priorities, and responsive problem solver; skill with numbers (evaluating analytics, managing budgets); and the ability to be a humble, flexible leader confident in their domain.

The On Being Project consists of three teams: On Being Studios produces content and creative direction across audio, video, and print; our Social Healing team is focused on growing and deepening engagement directly with individuals and communities towards social repair and transformation; and Operations & Vitality secures the resources and supports the infrastructure that allows us to thrive.

Our work is about joining inner life with outer presence in the world. As an organization, we  strive to embody what we transmit to the world, believing that “what we practice, we become.” For over three years, we have engaged an external partner in our iteration of a DEI process, our Placemaking Initiative. The process that has unfolded is woven through our organizational life in an ongoing way, including training, individual and team coaching, and specific projects that help us make Placemaking a daily, lived practice. Everyone at The On Being Project shares this commitment. It applies not only to how we understand and relate to each other at work, but also how we advance editorial perspectives, voices, and approaches in the content we produce and how we engage with our listeners, community networks, and partners.

We are a distributed team, with some staff working in our Minneapolis studio/workspace and others working remotely. The VP of Digital Experience and Strategy can be based in Minneapolis or remotely.

We offer a comprehensive benefits package including health care coverage, 401k retirement plan, parking or public transportation subsidy, a flexible Paid Time Off (PTO) policy, and three weeks of office closure break (two summer weeks and one year-end week).

The On Being Project supplies a laptop and all related and additional equipment necessary for each position. All staff use personal cell phones for communication. This position has the physical requirements of sitting at a desk daily for multiple hours and repetitive motions using wrists and hands.
