The Opportunity

The Production Assistant (PA) plays a central role in the On Being Studios team in supporting our production process, publishing our audio content each week across multiple platforms, and coordinating the systems and workflows for distributing and tracking our work.
The PA will work at the direction of our Senior Producers, Producers/Technical Directors, Producer, and Art Director to prepare and deploy content across our media platforms, including public radio, podcast, app, and website.

Those platforms include Simplecast, Content Depot, Wordpress, iTunes, Strapi content management system, Google Drive, Dropbox, and

We don’t imagine that the incoming PA is an expert in all of these platforms, but rather they have experience in detail-oriented data entry in a digital media environment, and are skilled at and excited to learn new technologies and back-end platforms.

Additionally, as part of our culture of collaboration in the weekly production of On Being, the Production Assistant will contribute to editorial conversations and widen our lens of perspectives and voices of diverse identities. This is an opportunity to be part of the editorial process, but this is not primarily an editorial role.

Primary Responsibilities & Expectations:

The Production Assistant will manage the day-to-day duties and tasks required to produce On Being, Living the Questions, Poetry Unbound and the On Being Wisdom app. The essential responsibilities of this job span pre-production, production, and post-production, and include weekly, seasonal, and occasional duties.

Audio Production for Public Radio, Podcast, App, and Website distribution


  • Supports the full production and publishing of weekly On Being episodes across all audio and digital platforms, including: managing the transcript process (scheduling, file management, invoicing); publishing the show to our feeds and platforms (creating Content Depot pages; transferring information from internal documents to external feeds; updating spreadsheets; metadata tagging of files and music in iTunes; uploading audio and adding copy to the app CMS); confirming/researching music as needed; website production (creating new or updating old web pages); coordinating permissions for poetry featured in the show (contacting publishers, processing payment); and adding On Being episodes to the Wisdom app content management system.
  • Supports the Senior Producer in securing additional information needed to publish weekly episodes including media releases, headshots, poetry permissions, and books from book publishers.
  • Supports the production and maintenance of the On Being Wisdom app, adding and updating shows, audio, and copy within the content management system; and tracking progress in
  • Contributes perspectives to editorial discussions around episode content.
  • Track, organize and contribute information to for weekly episode production including: updating production status, adding titles, guest demographics, document links and creating subitems.

Seasonally or Occasionally:

  • Supports the full production and publishing of the seasonal Poetry Unbound podcast across all audio and digital platforms, including: managing the transcript process; creating new web pages for two episodes and two poems weekly throughout a season; and coordinating permissions (contacting publishers, tracking and organizing permissions in, invoicing and processing payments). (Seasonally, 3 months – 2x per year)
  • Supports the production of occasional Living the Questions segments, including similar tasks as outlined above for the production of On Being.
  • Participates in ongoing evaluation and updating of processes, strategies, guides, and templates related to production.

Tracking, Organizing, and Archiving


  • Update in-house funder and metric spreadsheets.
  • Support the Studios team in tracking and measuring impact, both quantitative data and qualitative anecdotes/stories


  • Track and organize our internal methods for music use, including management of playlists and files within music software (iTunes, Spotify) .
  • Track new sponsors from our public radio distributor, WNYC, and coordinate the recording and file delivery.
  • Coordinate the shipping of mic kits to and from guests of the show.
  • Manage contacts in
  • Clean-up Pro Tools sessions and archive on Dropbox and in-house servers.

Generally available to work 40 hours per week, via phone/Zoom/email/occasional in-person. We are a flexible team and work to accommodate personal schedules and we will need you to be readily available for peak production deadlines (specifically on Wednesdays and Thursdays before weekly publication of On Being). You will be supported by team members who will be able to cover these dates/duties to accommodate time off.

The Studios team, which the Production Assistant will be joining, is composed of the Host, Senior Producers (2), Producer/Technical Directors (2), Producer, Creative Director, and Art Director. The team is a mix of Minneapolis-based and fully remote – currently made up of 2 white cisgender women; 1 Latino cisgender man of Mexican descent; 1 first generation Indian-American immigrant cisgender man; 2 white cisgender men; and 1 second generation Vietnamese-American cisgender woman.

Logistics of this Role

On Being Project is a distributed team with staff working from our home office in Minneapolis and remotely. Minneapolis staff work in a hybrid manner with a mix of in the office and from home schedules. We also have staff working remotely from New York, Washington state, Wisconsin, and Amsterdam.

The Production Assistant will be provided an On Being Project laptop and related equipment, including the necessary production tools to do the job. All staff use personal cell phones for communication. This position has the physical requirements of sitting at a desk daily for multiple hours and repetitive motions using wrists and hands. The On Being Project office in Minneapolis is located in Loring Park, and is an open floor plan with a mix of collaborative and quiet workspaces.
