Managing Editor

The On Being Project is looking for a Managing Editor to execute an audience-centered digital content strategy, lead us in metrics and measurement across platforms, and supervise a small team. 

The On Being Project is a non-profit media and public life initiative. We make a public radio show, podcasts, and tools for the art of living that explore the intersection of spiritual inquiry, science, social healing, community, poetry, and the arts. Through content, experiences and practical tools, we tend the human change that makes social transformation possible. 

The Managing Editor will be a leader within our Community & Design team, which is made up of designers, editors and project managers. The team’s mission is to create useful, beautiful things that extend the reach and impact of our content, connect our audiences to us and each other, and deepen their agency in the world. You’ll find our work on onbeing.org, social media (Instagram is our favorite), and in our newsletter, The Pause

The ideal candidate for this role is a collaborative leader and an advocate for audiences who is only satisfied when they’re experimenting and iterating. They relish the work of management (of both projects and people), have a keen editor’s eye, strategic sensibilities and an expertise in spotting trends and stories in numbers.

This is a full-time position that will report to the Executive Director of Community & Design. The position must be based out of our main offices in Minneapolis. Relocation assistance is available. 

 

What you’ll be doing:  

  • Manage The On Being Project’s digital editorial operation on a day-to-day basis, including: oversight of the editorial calendar and content promotion schedule, along with writing and editing content

  • Lead the organization in turning insights (qualitative and quantitative) into editorial actions by analyzing various inputs across platforms (audio, site, social media, and our CRM), conducting user research and providing strategic recommendations 

  • Supervise editors and project managers on the Community & Design team, manage their individual goals and attend to their career growth

  • Apply strategic muscle and structure to our experiments so we can learn and grow deliberately

  • Oversee daily/monthly/quarterly analytics reporting for onbeing.org, social media, newsletters and audio platforms 

  • Develop and lead audience research and surveys

  • Manage rights and permissions for written material on onbeing.org

 

Your qualifications:

  • Have a minimum of 6-8 years experience as a content strategist, audience editor, or similar role in a journalism, media or communications context

  • Possess a love of language, solid journalistic foundation and mastery of AP Style 

  • Be familiar with On Being’s content and listen to podcasts regularly

  • Be a humble, collaborative, organized leader who is authoritative in their domain

  • Have deep experience with:

    • Writing and editing (and training/mentoring people in both)

    • Analytics and audience measurement tools (like Google Analytics)

    • Content strategy and SEO

    • Social media and newsletter platforms

  • Have at least some experience with: 

    • Team building and shaping workflows to encourage coordination and support

    • Design thinking and iterative development methods (like Agile)

    • User experience design principles 

    • Project management tools (like Trello) and CRM products (like Salesforce and NationBuilder)

    • WordPress

  4. What is something you’d like us to know about yourself that we wouldn’t ordinarily get from a resume?
